Studio in the City

Summer 2020

We had the honour of being artist mentors for Studio in the City, an annual program which gives teens a chance to apprentice on a public art project in the City of North Vancouver.

This year, in response to COVID-19, Studio 13 pivoted from creating a single mural to supporting the City’s Open Streets Project through a series of smaller activations.

The studio team met over zoom leading up to on-site painting days. The online meetings included education on placemaking, mural design and sessions focused on artwork development for each of the activations.

The team created artwork for parklet areas on Lonsdale, the first being a series of flower pots featured on 14th ave celebrating Pride. The second flower pot activation was outside the business’ on 17th- the artwork inspired by the services provided in that block. The Studio 13 team also created a series of “mini murals” to be featured along the parklet areas along Open Streets. Each artist or artist duo on the team created a series of 4 panels inspired by the community of North Vancouver. These panels have been installed on the Lifespace garden boxes along the Open Streets parklets.
